edgeofthebush Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 Global warming, meteor impacts, super volcanos, can cause or end ice ages, how has this affected the relative orientation (like the lead weight that keeps you car/truck tires balanced) of the planet, seeing as how the ice caps are melting, I have heard at one time true north(not magnetic north) was over northern Germany, at some point in geological history it shifted to somewhere over hudsands bay, at around tenthousand yrs bc, it shifted again to where it is today, with the warming trend, the poles are not the only thing melting, the glaciers too are going, how has the displacement, from solid and above sea level, to a rising sea level, affected this balance, I ask cause the boxing day tsunami event caused a redrawing of the map, and a orientation adjustment for the GPS system, also green land reports the sun rise was two days early... The only way is can see this being tested is with a super computer, a very accurate topographical map, and up to date glacier maps, some forecasting models might help.
Strange Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 I have heard at one time true north(not magnetic north) was over northern Germany, at some point in geological history it shifted to somewhere over hudsands bay, at around tenthousand yrs bc, it shifted again to where it is today Definitely not. Although I suppose it is possible that those land masses were once position over the North Pole (because they moved, not the Earth's axis). I ask cause the boxing day tsunami event caused a redrawing of the map, and a orientation adjustment for the GPS system, also green land reports the sun rise was two days early... I don't believe any of those things happened. Do you have a reference?
swansont Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 Redistribution of mass, such as from melting of icecaps, does affect the rotation rate of the earth by a minuscule amount. It contributes to variations of around a millisecond/day over the course of several years, on top of the seasonal variations of a similar magnitude. http://tycho.usno.navy.mil/leapsec.html Tsunamis/earthquakes are sometimes reported as having shifts in the rotation rate (IIRC of microseconds/day) but I once asked someone who measures earth orientation parameters for GPS, and was told that these have never actually been measured. They are below the measurement sensitivity and the estimates assume no other mitigating mass-shifting effects, which exist.

Any such impact sufficient to move the pole significantly would trash the planet. If massive earthquakes have almost no discernable effect you can see that collisions would have to be stupendous to do so. They would be unsurvivable except for a few plants and simple animals on the far side of the planet. The distortion in the shape of the planet would persist for billions of years. It's not impossible that the entire surface might slip on the core but this has not been established and should show up in the physical record. It seems highly improbable such a change has occured recently.
