What is Chemical factor?

Featured Replies

I am required to analyze a sample prepared in inorganic chemistry, but after going through the outlined steps, I have the following:

Weight of ppt =

Chemical factor =

Concentration in 10 ml =

Concentration in 1L =

% of Ni+ =

I have the weight of my precipitate, but I am confused on what chemical factor stand for. I started with 0.2 grams of the prepared salt and the molecular weight of the compound is 394.99, while am to calculate the concentration of Nickel ion in the salt. How do I go about this?

The fraction by weight of a particular constituent in a given precipitate.

For example the chemical factor for Fe in Fe2O3 is 0.6994.

So if we have a precipitate of 10g of ferric oxide it contains 10 x 0.6994 g of iron

Good gravimetric analysis texts offer tables of chemical factors.

You can also use stochiometry of the reaction to calculate the fraction yourself, if you do not know the factor.

Can you work out how to do this?
