pavelcherepan Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 I've seen a few larvae like in the picture below a few times in the last few days. I live in Melbourne, Australia and so far looking through various websites I think it must be the larva form of Darkling beetle. What do you guys think?
StringJunky Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 (edited) This is the larva of a Click Beetle. Entomology's not my thing but looks a good match to your specimen: http://bugguide.net/images/cache/IKVKGKBK0K30EQ10NQY01Q30UQRSAQRS7KVKAQ304QD0RK6KRKD0HKT05Q6KRKWKSKWKSKA0SKEK5QA0KKWK2QEKRK.jpg Edited April 18, 2015 by StringJunky 1

This one looks very similar!
StringJunky Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 Did you read the first link? Interesting how, when threatened, it goes on its back and flicks itself away out of trouble, making a click sound as it does so.
pavelcherepan Posted April 18, 2015 Author Posted April 18, 2015 Yeah, I have read that one but can't perform an experiment now because my better half had banished my subjects from the house

pavelcherepan Posted April 18, 2015 Author Posted April 18, 2015 Was you going to see its development through to the beetle stage? Actually a good idea Next time I find one I'll keep it and feed with some roots from the backyard. Let's see what it's going to become. 2
hypervalent_iodine Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 In my younger years, I used to go around looking for click beetles for the purpose of making them click in my hand and jump around. They can reach some pretty amazing heights for something so tiny. 1
