petrushka.googol Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 If a light beam undergoes gravitational lensing through a maximum theoretically possible 360 degrees what does this imply in translation through the space time continuum ? Displacement in space (using the analogy of classical physics) is zero but clearly time has elapsed. Movement through the light cone is zero but actually events have transpired. How do you explain this ?
Strange Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 If a light beam undergoes gravitational lensing through a maximum theoretically possible 360 degrees what does this imply in translation through the space time continuum ? Light will orbit a black hole at the right distance. The trouble is, if it is close enough to do that, then it is too close to ever leave and it will continue in its orbit (which probably isn't stable and so it will enter the black hole). Displacement in space (using the analogy of classical physics) is zero but clearly time has elapsed. I suppose this would be the extreme example of Shapiro delay.
