fresh Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 (edited) i wash my clothes everyday in summer, i hang it outside, let it dry naturally. i heard it is illegal to do it in America, why ? why they like to use dryer ?? use the dryer to dry a bra and an underwear ? it is a waste of money and not environment-friendly. where do u guys hang your clothes ? where do u guys hang your washed underwear ? Edited May 26, 2015 by fresh
Endy0816 Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 (edited) It is illegal in some states, though not in all. Generally just looked down upon though. I think that is the main reason it isn't as prevalent in the U.S. We're generally talking about a week's worth of clothes, so simple weather can also be an issue. Humidity cause drying to take longer where I live and it is likely as not to rain before all the clothes are finished drying. Edit: Changing the past changes the future. swansont Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 Illegal? That must be relatively recent, since people used to do it all the time. (Google pause) "illegal" may be a misnomer. It seemingly is against homeowner association rules in many places, not laws. And those rules are being rules against the law in places http://daily.sightline.org/2012/02/21/clothesline-bans-void-in-19-states/ 1

swansont Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 thanks for your link. i wonder why the rule/law against freshly airdried clothes was set in the first place ? My impression is that many homeowners associations put a large emphasis on how the community looks. They tend to have rules on what things you can put in your yard that's visible, what colors you can paint your house, etc.
CharonY Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 (edited) As swansont said these rules are set by homeowner's associations, so they are not law. These associations typically want to preserve a certain look of a given neighbourhood, and often require certain optical arrangements of your home. This may include certain colour of your house, a certain look of your frontyard etc. Some apparently also think that clotheslines may look ugly and diminish the value of their area. But sometimes theses people are also just idiots on a powertrip. edit: Cross-posted Edited May 26, 2015 by CharonY 1
fresh Posted May 26, 2015 Author Posted May 26, 2015 these rules are quite similar to the ones in prison & dormitory. 2
zapatos Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 these rules are quite similar to the ones in prison & dormitory. So are rules about washing your hands after using the bathroom. Just because two groups share a rule doesn't imply the two groups are similar in other ways.
Phi for All Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 OK, so bad assumption that it's illegal to air dry. And in some climates, it's not practical. I hang dry my clothes indoors, since I can't count on it not raining, I'm not always home to bring them indoors if it does. Perhaps line drying isn't ALWAYS best. use the dryer to dry a bra and an underwear ? I think you're being a bit ridiculous here. Of course it's a waste of money to run a single garment through the dryer. And my wife and daughter won't let me put bras in there. Lingerie is hand washed and dried indoors. I fold underwear, so I want it dry first, to avoid mildew.
swansont Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 And my wife and daughter won't let me put bras in there. I can understand not letting you put their bras in there, but … (I don't want to judge your dressing habits) 1
Phi for All Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 I can understand not letting you put their bras in there, but … (I don't want to judge your dressing habits) My wife asked me to take off her bra, so I did. It was pinching me a little anyway. 3
MigL Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 HaHa. Phi has to do the laundry. Do you also do the baking, Nancy ? Seriously, most guys I know don't have a clue about doing laundry. Unfortunately ( or ? ) I'm single, and my cats certainly won't do it...
ajb Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 I thought you Americans just let your Mexican housekeepers deal with all that.

ajb Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 The negative point will teach me to be more careful with my jokes.
DrP Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 Well I laughed at it anyway! ;-) Maybe someone found it offensive? lol.
MigL Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 I thought it funny. But, let's face it, you're no Eric Idle.
Phi for All Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 HaHa. Phi has to do the laundry. I like the chores where the appliances do the hard part. Do you also do the baking, Nancy ? I wish. That's another bit of work where you do some prep, then let an appliance take over. I thought you Americans just let your Mexican housekeepers deal with all that. We use Mexicans because the Canadians we know are too lazy, and apparently don't believe in laundry. Also, we find the Mexican accent is generally more appealing and understandable.
Moontanman Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 (edited) I thought you Americans just let your Mexican housekeepers deal with all that. Wait! What? No one told me we get housekeepers! Edited May 28, 2015 by Moontanman
MigL Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 My apologies AJB... I'd never looked closely enough, and thought your avatar was Eric Idle. And no, I never watch Dr. Who.
imatfaal Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 My apologies AJB... I'd never looked closely enough, and thought your avatar was Eric Idle. And no, I never watch Dr. Who. ! Moderator Note How many warning points is it for admitting you don't watch Dr Who and don't know who Tom Baker is?
fresh Posted May 28, 2015 Author Posted May 28, 2015 It is ok we hang our clothes in balcony ? easier ? more convenient ? right? not against rule ?
CharonY Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 My apologies AJB... I'd never looked closely enough, and thought your avatar was Eric Idle. And no, I never watch Dr. Who. I actually wanted to say that most people are not Eric Idle, including Tom Baker. But yeah, timing and such. 1
hypervalent_iodine Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 It is ok we hang our clothes in balcony ? easier ? more convenient ? right? not against rule ? Guess that depends on where you are. In Australia, hanging clothes out on a back yard clothes line is perfectly common. For me, hanging them on my patio area would be a bit annoying if I wanted to use said area, but apartment dwellers don't often have much of a choice.
StringJunky Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 (edited) Guess that depends on where you are. In Australia, hanging clothes out on a back yard clothes line is perfectly common. To twist your intented meaning slightly: because it is "perfectly common", is why certain places won't allow it. It is perfectly acceptable to do this where I live. Edited May 29, 2015 by StringJunky
