All the talk about Civil War history confuses the issue some. The Civil War ended in 1865. The Confederate Rebel flag did not start flying over the South Carolina state capital in 1866. Nor was it part of Georgia's flag. The flag was raise in South Carolinia in 1961 during the battle for civil rights. The Rebel flag was added to the Georgia flag in 1956 after the Brown vs the Board of education ruling. These were not ambigious actions at the time. They were clear racist protests against de-segregation. GWTW was not shown in public squares across the South to send a message. Context matters. Truth is many Confederate memorials and tributes were built with the clear intention to send a racial and political message.
