Mordred Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 YERKES OBSERVATORY University of Chicago's Yerkes Observatory is an astronomical observatory located at Williams Bay, Wisconsin, USA.
ACG52 Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Ykciwz - name of the star with the Hipparcos number of 46515
Mordred Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 (edited) ZETA ORIONIS a star at the eastern end of Orion's belt (Lol the letter y is getting challenging) Edited August 4, 2015 by Mordred
ACG52 Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 (edited) Sanurphuey- star with the Hipparcos number 37329 (The hipparcos catalog is great) Edited August 4, 2015 by ACG52
Mordred Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 (edited) REFLECTION NEBULA A reflection nebula is a nebula that glows as the dust in it reflects the light of nearby stars. These nebulae are frequently bluish in color because blue light is more efficiently reflected than red light. A reflection nebula surrounds the Pleiades Star Cluster. Edited August 4, 2015 by Mordred
ACG52 Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Yeah, but the letter was.'y'. The word star was in the description not the name
Mordred Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 YLEM Ylem (or Yelm) is the name given to the hypothetical primordial matter from which all the elements have formed. George Gamow proposed the existence of ylem. fair enough I originally had this, but editted it as we went off y for various galaxy names.
Mordred Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Yohkoh (sunbeam) A Japanese satellite launched in August 1991 designed to study the dynamics, energetics, and morphology of solar flares. (Went through the thread noticed Acme already used the above)
ACG52 Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Hypergalaxy -a system consisting of a spiral galaxy surrounded by several dwarf white galaxies, often ellipticals. Our galaxy and the Andromeda galaxy are examples of hypergalaxies.
MigL Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Year Time taken for Earth to make one revolution about the Sun. ( no, I'm not going back to check if its been used already )
ACG52 Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Radiation Belt -a ring-shaped region around a planet in which electrically charged particles (usually electrons and protons) are trapped.
Mordred Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Tidal locking-is a net result of continued tidal braking wherein the satellite orbits with the same face always pointed toward its primary. The Moon is tidally locked with the Earth.
MigL Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Goldstone boson A spin 0, massless particle which is produced when a global symmetry is spontaneously broken.
Mordred Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Number density-is the quantity of some specified particle or object class per unit volume
ACG52 Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 (edited) Nova- a star that flares up to several times its original brightness for some time before returning to its original state (I can't believe we haven't used this, but it doesn't show up in search) (We also seem to be drifting away from astronomy and cosmology and into particle physics...I'm just sayin...) Edited August 5, 2015 by ACG52
Mordred Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 (edited) Am star-is a chemically peculiar star belonging to the more general class of A-type stars. The spectrum of the Am stars shows abnormal enhancements and deficiencies of certain metals (PS particle physics is a primary field of science in Cosmology, one thing I learned Cosmology involves all forms of physics and in many applications chemistry) which explains why I studied high energy particle physics Edited August 5, 2015 by Mordred
ACG52 Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Particle physics could be said to be a primary field of all science. 😄
Mordred Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 (edited) Particle physics could be said to be a primary field of all science. 😄 Not so much in everyday applications, in Cosmology and GUT it's essential, good example is causes of expansion and CMB measurements, also Big bang nucleosynthesis Edited August 5, 2015 by Mordred
ACG52 Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 (edited) Regulus -is the brightest star in the constellation Leo and one of the brightest stars in the night sky, lying approximately 79 light years from Earth. Regulus is a multiple star system composed of four stars that are organized into two pairs. (Can't believe I haven't used this one either) Edited August 5, 2015 by ACG52
Mordred Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Stellar atmosphere, or stellar envelope, is the outermost region of a star.
ACG52 Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 ergosphere - a region located outside a rotating black hole. Its name is derived from the Greek word ergon, which means work. Sleep - what I'm about to do.
Mordred Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 (edited) Evolutionary track is a curve on the HertzsprungRussell diagram that a solitary star, of a particular mass and composition, is expected to follow during the course of its evolution. This curve predicts the combination of temperature and luminosity that a star will have during part or all of its lifetime (Sleep tight) Edited August 5, 2015 by Mordred
MigL Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Kerr black hole A rotating black hole described by Kerr's solution to the Einstein equations for a spinning, point mass.
ACG52 Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Davida- an asteroid with a mean diameter of 289km,a semimajor axis of 3.16 au discovered in 1903 by R.S. Dugan
