Dave Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 I know I keep harping on about it quite a bit recently, but what's stopping people from coming on IRC? I've posted a small poll about it, hope you'll all vote. I've always been a big fan of IRC, and I think for a community like this it's a great asset. Hope I'll see you all soon
Dave Posted March 30, 2005 Author Posted March 30, 2005 Hmm, that was a rather bad choice of poll option. Nevermind
Phi for All Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 I haven't gotten on before because the few experiences I've had with chat left me pretty cold. I like to post because it gives me a bit to think about what I'm saying. I chat vocally on the phone for a living. To sit and type to talk live grates like a fork on bone. But I'm willing to try it again. It might be different chatting with the fine folk here. Prod me no more, Dave. A convert I will be.
Dave Posted March 30, 2005 Author Posted March 30, 2005 I'm going to convert this community if it kills me. I think I'd better start looking for funeral homes
ed84c Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 I dislike IRC, its too raw, although it can be interesting joining random chat rooms........ You will find more people will join if java chat is reopened, as it is a lot quicker and easier to do it that way.
Dave Posted March 31, 2005 Author Posted March 31, 2005 We'll try and get some kind of java applet up and running soonish.
Hellbender Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 Live chat isn't my thing, like Phi said Posting gives me time to think and maybe look things up and form more thought-out rebuttles. Chatting is so rapid-fire sometimes, and I just don't type that fast.

blike Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 Like we actually talk about science in the chat room. PPPFFFTTT.
ed84c Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 I think Lance mentioned something to do with science once, needless to say he was slapped.
ydoaPs Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 i think an IM type thing would be better. it is hard to post and chat at the same time.
5614 Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 Time mainly. I used to quite a bit, if I get time I will again. at the end of the day though you are always going to get more quality outta SFN itself, the IRC is chat for extra time, which I dont have atm.
ecoli Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 It doesn't work for me...currently working on that problem.
Klaynos Posted April 1, 2005 Posted April 1, 2005 Like we actually talk about science in the chat room. PPPFFFTTT. The latest from IRC.... <Lance|ham> ah yes <Lance|ham> ham <Lance|ham> good stuff <+Klaynos> * Lance|ham tosses a slice to Klaynos <+Klaynos> mmmm ham <+Klaynos> thanks No science there... no thinking there either but that's because I had an imput...
bloodhound Posted April 1, 2005 Posted April 1, 2005 First of all I hate having multiple servers... I am mostly on Rizon with nick bhound.
Dave Posted April 1, 2005 Author Posted April 1, 2005 It's not hard to get something like X-Chat working nicely with multiple servers.
bloodhound Posted April 1, 2005 Posted April 1, 2005 I usually idle on irc 24/7 its just that mirc becomes so cluttered with all the channels and server open , i can't be boetthered to connect to yet another server.
Dave Posted April 1, 2005 Author Posted April 1, 2005 You should give X-Chat a go. Removes a hell of a lot of clutter. I can't stand mIRC personally, drives me up the wall.
