kos Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Main infrared atmospheric window is between 8 - 14 um . So that's the region of spectrum where the atmosphere is transparent. That's why our Earth cools down a little bit. Does it mean that the major band of emissivity of most of earth's matter is in the region of the window ( 8-14 um )

(emissivity is a property of materials, telling you how much they act like a blackbody) The emission window matches up with the blackbody profile of something near 300K. http://www.r-s-c-c.org/node/114 http://how-it-looks.blogspot.com/2010/01/infrared-radiation-black-bodies-and.html
John Cuthber Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 In fairness,an object's emissivity is wavelength dependent. It has to be because some things are coloured. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirchhoff%27s_law_of_thermal_radiation
