Function Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 (edited) Hello everyone Let me get to the point: When I connect my PS3 with an ethernet cable to the internet, it works (only when configurating, it gives every now and then a problem; like it says occasionally (only when configuring): connect cable, or something like that; as if there isn't a cable connected). When connected, little or no problems occur. If I'm to connect my laptop to the internet via a UTP-cable (U/UTP CAT6a), in the network section, it pops up for about half a second, saying "identifying", and thereafter quickly "Cable not connected", and then it disappears, to show up again after a few seconds. It is maybe interesting to know that I get a stable connection with my laptop when I connect it directly to the router itself. Does anyone have any idea on how to solve this? It's not a computer problem, is it now? That'd be awful. No need for pressure, but I need this sorted out by sunday. Thank you very much in advance. F. Edited September 16, 2015 by Function
studiot Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 (edited) Has your router got device recognition security on the lan? You may also need to turn the wifi off on your laptop before trying to connect via a cable. Edited September 16, 2015 by studiot
Function Posted September 16, 2015 Author Posted September 16, 2015 (edited) No idea :/ How can I tell if it does? Turning off WiFi won't do the trick: it shows this for a few tenths of a second and then it directly shows the "no wifi" (turned off) icon for a somewhat longer time (they alternate) EDIT: going to hardware manager, changing the advanced properties of my controller at "Speed & duplex", I manage to get connection when picking "10 Mbps full", but not with "Automatic thingy", nor "100 Mbps full". So it is working somehow, yet is there a way to get 100 Mbps? Note that I'm not planning on using an ethernet cable at home, but in my dorm at university (I'm moving there on Sunday), so maybe it'll work there? Opinions? Might it have to do something with the cable? The connection with 10 Mbps was established with a cat 5 cable from my PS3, not my new cat 6a cable I'll be using in my dorm room Maybe also wise to mention that the direct connection with my router WAS made with this new cable, and established speed of 100 Mbps Edited September 16, 2015 by Function
studiot Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 Solving this out logically will be good practice for you sorting symptoms as a future doctor. You have two different devices that give occasional or regular trouble connecting on a cable to this router. First suspects are therefore cable and the router. Have you a friend with a router you can plug your laptop and cable into to see if it works properly on another network? Many laptops these days have a light adjacent to the ethernet connector that can indicate the quality of the connection, by flickering, remaining steady or change colour. The same goes for the router. How many ethernet sockets has the router? Is the problem the same in all of them? Is you laptop Windows or linux? If Windows have you looked at Network Connections and disconnected the wifi there? What does the LAN connection tell you? No one should be using 10baseT ethernet these days. Cat 5 or Cat 6 are both fine for 100baseT. Don't know the make and model of your router but the French Invensys has the device recognition capability. This is called MAC address filtering https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ff521761.aspx
Function Posted September 16, 2015 Author Posted September 16, 2015 (edited) No one nearby, living in a very small village, all my friends live much further than me Anyway, I'll probably test it Friday (when I collect my dorm key + badge) and see if it works there My laptop doesn't have an ethernet connection light I think my router has the possibility of supplying 3 or 4 sockets at a time and the problem is presenting every time, connecting to every socket. I have Windows 10 I have disconnected the wifi, and the LAN connection keeps presenting the same problem: transient messages of identifying the network, followed by the evenly transient message that no cable is connected, followed by nothing, and this repeats itself every few seconds Our router was given to us by our internet providing company (Telenet), and is a CBN, model CH6643E (Or that's the modem... is there a difference? I'm not such a "savant" in that area) Edited September 16, 2015 by Function
Function Posted September 20, 2015 Author Posted September 20, 2015 Problem isn't present in my dorm room ^^
fiveworlds Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Problem isn't present in my dorm room You know I have a similar problem at my dad's no more than 1 person can connect to lan at any one time. I think it is the isp squeezing us because I don't think there is anything wrong with my router.
