Actually, aren't all fuels gasses during the burning process? It isn't really the liquid itself that is burning, it's the vapors coming off the heated liquid that burn and keep the flame going.

Yep also on some candles if you have a short wick you can see the flame hovering just above the wick (not all candles though).

or if you blow out a normal cnadle and hold a flame a few inches above the smoldering candle in the smoke the candle will relight without touching the wick.
