Vitul Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 What do you guys think of 'being awesome' in society?
DrP Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Well, you kinda get used to it after a while. ;-) 2
Ophiolite Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 I think "being awesome" is a value judgement largely conditioned by the environment of the individual making the judgement. The phraseology suggests that only someone under 25 (pick a number you like better, if required) would actually consider anyone as "being awesome". So, what Vitul, do you actually mean by "being awesome", for it seems to me it could mean a great many quite different things.
Vitul Posted February 22, 2016 Author Posted February 22, 2016 "Awesomeness, in turn, concerns the art of creating social openings – such people are skilled at the awesome art of inspiring community on the small and large scale." - Nick Riggle, www.aeon.co I mostly agree with Mr. Riggle. According to me, being awesome is analogous to being unconventional, and this tends to have a positive effect on society. Awesomeness has evolved beyond the traditional definitions and needs to be redefined.
DrP Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Awesome is defined as something that inspires awe. I would have thought this definition to be fine. I do not think the word has gone beyond any (correct) definition of the word according to the dictionary (the correct source for the definition of words - not a quote from some random bloke on the internet). So - 'being awesome in society' means that you inspire awe and wonder in others in society, presumably from your good or amazing deeds or looks or sound or anything else that inspires awe. 1
Phi for All Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 I mostly agree with Mr. Riggle. According to me, being awesome is analogous to being unconventional, and this tends to have a positive effect on society. Awesomeness has evolved beyond the traditional definitions and needs to be redefined. Many of us would say that being awesome has nothing to do with unconventionality. It has to do with removing the dross from life and focusing on what we know beyond doubt is our best investment, ourselves. What you call unconventional, I would call getting back to basics. We evolved high intelligence in part because of our cooperative nature as a species (or the high intelligence allowed us to see the benefits of working together). We're very good at seeing what needs to be done, and then getting a group of us together to make sure it happens awesomely. We're naturally a species that can combine cooperativeness with an awesome communication skillset, tool use, and all the things high intelligence has made us aware of. To me, being awesome as a human means being part of a whole that's watching out for ways to bring out the best in ourselves. I'm a firm believer that mankind does better when there are fewer people at the extreme ends of wealth, and more people enjoy a higher level of basic prosperity. And any time someone learns a bit more of the accumulated human knowledge that so many have dedicated their lives to compile, I think that's really awesome. Well, you kinda get used to it after a while. ;-) Spittake. Monitor wet. Very funny.
John Cuthber Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 To be awesome actually means to inspire awe. (And it isn't always a good thing) Mr Riggle, on the other hand, inspires a recollection of this sort of thing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Mr._Men_The_Complete_Collection_(2010),_bottom_cover.pdf
Robittybob1 Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 When David Tua misspelt awesome he tried to lie saying it was Orson not awesome. That seemed unethical to us in NZ. David Tua - Wheel Of Fortune - O For Awesome
