raymond galli Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 Space travel and exploration. Why does mankind think ( fast and furious) is the key to space travel? Because it's going to be forever, slow and self contained is my thought.
iNow Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 Using current technologies, the only way to conceivably go far enough to reach other systems and stars is at extremely fast speeds (like impossibly fast approaching c), and even then it's questionable whether or not we'll get where we want within our own lifespan. Is your question here about what other technologies or approaches we should consider building to make these same trips more rapidly and successfully? Perhaps you wish to explore why we as a species aren't focused more on finding how to achieve that as opposed to making incremental progress with current tech? Basically, what do you wish to discuss, and what do you mean when asking, "why does humankind think fast and furious is the key to space travel?"
Strange Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 Using current technologies, the only way to conceivably go far enough to reach other systems and stars is at extremely fast speeds (like impossibly fast approaching c), and even then it's questionable whether or not we'll get where we want within our own lifespan. There have been many science fiction (and, for all I know, serious) ideas for generation ships where journeys take many millennia. So I don't think that fast is the only way to go. On the other hand, such stories often focus on the problems of such a mission (breakdown of community/civilization, forgetting what the purpose was, etc.)
Phi for All Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 I don't see our expansion into space starting with travel to another planet. I think it's going to start with our own system, grabbing resources that are already off-planet to build colonies and research centers to help build our knowledge. The more we put ourselves out there, the more we learn. There's no viable reason at this point to invest in a generation ship mission to another planet. But there are obviously lots of opportunities cropping up for sustainable and effective use of space as a global resource. If we could get our act together as a species, as planetary ambassadors, we could invest in some truly amazing exploration around our own star. 1

Because it's going to be forever, slow and self contained is my thought. .There appears to be something indemic in the human ' state ' , that makes us all feel we need to travel , often at fast speeds , vaste distances to reach something much ' nicer' , ' better' . That's why a lot of people opt for going to the opposite sides of the world to have a ' holiday of a lifetime. ' . Two years ago , I was almost at the point of saying to one of my daughters , ( then doing the back pack around the globe to Australia. Including , near the Great Barrier Reef ) . I said , ( me loving swimming ) " I will fly over (never having been around the globe before ) , and meet you on the beach , near the Reef . ( " I will swim out to the reef amusing myself , while I wait " ) . Little did I know , that it was 50 miles out to sea , highly dangerous , and needed guides, and boats, and lots of money! ( chump ! ) . I never did go , as they put me straight . I had a good trip instead down to the lovely Coast in Sw England , only half an hour away ( that summer) . The moral of this story is :- One is just as likely to find the most satisfying solution , as to where to explore ...:- NEXT DOOR ' Mike Edited April 8, 2016 by Mike Smith Cosmos
