Moontanman Posted April 17, 2016 Posted April 17, 2016 I went out today by myself to do a little collecting, first time out since my last surgery. My target species was Redfin Pickerel, but the prime collecting site is on private property and had a no trespassing sign up and the owner wasn't home to ask his permission so I didn't get to collect there. He had told me several years ago I was welcome to collect any time but now there is a fence and that was several years ago and I'm not sure the same guy lives there. No pickerels were caught. I did get the following species. Swamp Darter 1 Pirate perch 1 Blue spotted sunfish 3 Several gambusia with one black spotted male... Wait for it! Three tiny Sirens! I thought they were eels at first but when I put on my glasses it was obvious they were Sirens! First really small Sirens I have ever caught. They were about 3" long... I also caught two salamanders of unknown species several large turtles. stink pots and yellow sliders. I very large and unhappy red bellied snake, he almost filled up the net! I also observed two large alligators sunning them selves, I figured they were better left alone, they were about 8' long. More surgery in a few weeks so I intend to get out again soon, have to have redfin pickerels before you can breed them! I did try my hand at micro fishing but only a few large green sunfish were caught. A watched a fisherman near me in Greenfield Lake spillway catch a large mouth bass, he released him after a picture was taken. Michael
Sirona Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 (edited) I've never quite been able to enjoy fishing but I have a sneaking suspicion it has something to do with me being unlucky, or just terrible at it. Although, I did enjoy urban prawn fishing in Taiwan last year (it's pretty hard to go hungry when they're in a small, shallow pool). The snorkelling at Silver Beach is quite good, you can see the beautiful weedy seadragon. Apparently you can sport the Port Jackson shark but I've not seen it. Snorkelling at Clovelly is not bad, you can see blue groper and surgeonfish. I've been snorkelling around New Caledonia and Vanuatu several times and I've seen green turtles, sweetlip cod, feather starfish, trumpet fish, soldierfish, damsel fish, sea urchins, sea snakes and loads of other magnificent creatures. I really want to visit Lord Howe Island too, I've heard the snorkelling is good. It's a very costly holiday though and not exactly backpacker friendly. Edited April 18, 2016 by Sirona
Moontanman Posted April 19, 2016 Author Posted April 19, 2016 I'd love to go to Vanautu, I'd probably be arrested, there is an animal there i would like to have it's unique and I would love to breed them, but they are off bounds, I'm not sure I could resist a freshwater hermit crab... Clibanarius fonticola The holy grail of freshwater invertebrate lovers like me!
Sirona Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 Hah, I wouldn't put it past you Moontanman! What about an Australian hermit crab, Pagurus sinuatus? I would love to see a picture of your aquarium!

Greg H. Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 I don't have the patience to fish. Fifteen minutes in, I'm trying to calculate a way to convince the fish to push themselves into my bucket so I can go home. LOL

I could touch and catch them before they realised what was going on.

Sirona Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 I don't have the patience to fish. Fifteen minutes in, I'm trying to calculate a way to convince the fish to push themselves into my bucket so I can go home. LOL Hah, I'm exactly the same, Greg. The irony is, I spent a lot of time at the beach doing absolutely nothing but enjoying the sound of the waves and the sea breeze, yet when I have been fishing, I can't relax. I suppose I associate fishing with eating and not a sport/hobby so instead of enjoying it for what it is, I am just thinking, 'I'm going to be having dinner very late tonight!'. Does this hermit crab live in freshwater? Inow posted links to my you tube aquarium vodeos, thanks INow No, they're land hermit crabs. We do have freshwater crabs though.
