5614 Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 If I were to obtain a small amount of MgO what exciting stuff could I do with it? I have some effectively useless Mg ribbon lying around and I've only ever seen Mg burn once! The product being MgO, what could I do with it? Also will much [math]Mg_3 N_2[/math] form from the Mg reacting with the nitrogen in the air? If so what can I do with it? If not what can I do with the MgO ?
YT2095 Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 it makes a great Asbestos replacement hence it`s use in MAGNOX reactors (MAGNOX= MAGNesium OXide). failing that, sprinkle it around the base of Tomatoe plants, it`ll stop the leaves going yellow

Lance Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 Why not? That's exactly what Maalox is. Maalox is tested on animals to insure that somebody didn't screw up along the production process. Magnesium hydroxide, courtesy of akcapr, is not.

budullewraagh Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 just a note to reply to h2so4's post. if you try to do a displacement reaction with a more active metal than Mg, it will react with water. if you try to do it dry, it will be an insane thermite.
YT2095 Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 why don`t you add HCl to it and make Magnesium Chloride, add that to soya milk and make your own Tofu )) I kid you not! A small amount of either Calcium Sulfate or Magnesium Chloride is introduced to coagulate the Milk. The Chinese have used the Calcium salt for 2000 years, mined from mountain quarries, the salt is the pure form of gypsum. The Japanese traditionally used Sea Salt to coagulate the Milk, and it is the small quantity of Magnesium Chloride in Sea Salt that does the trick. taken from: http://www.tofu.com/whatis.html
