Mr Rayon Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 Is it healthy to wear hair gel all the time? Is it good or bad for the hair? Does it have any harmful affects if applied everyday? How many times should one use hair gel on their hair per week, month etc.? Do you use hair gel? Why/why not?
MigL Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 I have used, and still use hair gel on occasion ( when I'm getting fancy for a special occasion like a dinner/date ) but I've stopped coloring it. I'm starting to like the George Clooney, salt n' pepper look. You will get build-up after several uses, even shampooing daily. If using it daily, suggest using dishwashing soap like Palmolive, once a week to cut the build up. ( however,if your hair is thinning that may be too harsh ) Those other two guys are probably jealous, because they've lost their hair. But, I gotta ask, why are you asking this on a science forum ?

I can't see any harm in using it occassionally and don't sleep on it. Edited May 28, 2016 by StringJunky
Strange Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 If it was dangerous they wouldn't sell it. (Or it would come with a warning.)

ajb Posted May 29, 2016 Posted May 29, 2016 Well ponder this... I have never seen a bald man with gel in his hair. 2
Mr Rayon Posted June 3, 2016 Author Posted June 3, 2016 Well ponder this... I have never seen a bald man with gel in his hair. what's to ponder? bald man has no hair so bald man does not apply hair gel to his hair. man with hair may apply hair gel to his hair...i see no link Anything that puts a layer on your scalp and potentially blocks the pores/follicles wouldn't be good in the long run, methinks. I can't see any harm in using it occassionally and don't sleep on it. hey im serious though. what's the latest scientific studies suggesting? e.g. can excessive hair gel use cause balding? can it make your skin/hair too oily leading to more pimples...?
Daecon Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 (edited) I think ajb was making a joke. I use hair gel every few days, but I also use "volume boost" style varieties of shampoo and conditioner. However the day after using gel (day 2,) I just rinse my hair in the shower without shampooing it, so the gel doesn't wash out, and on day 3 go back to shampoo/conditioner and hair gel.
