ksengg Posted May 29, 2016 Posted May 29, 2016 Hello,I have a bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering, and currently doing my masters in Computational Electromagnetics.I came to realize that my interest tends to be more on physics (or research career) rather than an engineering career. Are there possibilities to move from Engineering to applied physics when starting a PhD, or does that transition need to be made at masters level? Since in engineering, we tend to concentrate only on classical electromagnetics, I was wondering if it is possible to move to research on applications of quantum electrodynamics from an engineering background?Thank you very much.Regards
swansont Posted May 29, 2016 Posted May 29, 2016 You would have to check with whatever schools you are interested in, bu I would imagine that the switch shoukd be made as soon as possible, since you would need to fill in any gaps in classroom instruction. PhD work after a Masters is mainly research, at least in the US.
ajb Posted May 30, 2016 Posted May 30, 2016 As swansont says, you should check with the universities you are interetsed in. However, I know people who have crossed from engineering degree to theoretical physics PhD. So moving from your masters to a physics PhD should be okay.
