Yes you can, and most litmus paper comes with a scale on the side.

It's terribly inaccurate but it will give you some idea.

Unfortunatley not all litmust paper is made equal, so you will need the specific scale for your paper. (Concentration of the chemical on the litmus paper can varry)

Hmmm now that I think about this I can't specifically remember seing a scale on "blue" litmust paper. But I'm 100% possitive the multipurpose stuff we use has a scale on the side.

of course blue turns red in acids, but i just needed to know approximately what the ph would b. i dont need anything exact. lol. it didnt come with a scale. i got blue and red and neither of them have a scale. lol. :confused:

That is because it can't tell you the value, just whether it is acidic or basic.

 

If you think it's acidic, put the blue in and see if it turns red. If it doesn't change, then put a red one in; if that turns blue it means the solution is basic. If neither of them change then the pH is about 7.

 

It works just like litmus dye.
