chemtopper Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 Out of two possible prefixes, which one to follow:- 1) 2,4 dimethyl,6 ethyl 2) 2,6 dimethyl,4 ethyl Given that the parent ring is 1,3 dioxane According to IUPAC rule if there is tie for numbering as it appears in your example then we need to give lowest number alphabetically menas here in your example ethyl comes first so give 4 number to ethyl and 6 to methyl so the name is 2,6-dimethyl-4-ethyl.....
