Guest greeneyes Posted April 29, 2005 Posted April 29, 2005 Hi! I am an 8th grade honors science student. I have to do a project in which I create an animal capable of living on another planet. lucky me, i got venus (220mph winds, 800degrees f, sulfuric acid clouds, who wouldn't want to live there? ) We have to find a way for it to eat, breath, and deal with the surroundings. I was planning on having it eat the microbes they believe may live in the atmosphere. if anyone has any suggestions, in plain english when possible, i would appreciate it. thank you!
Callipygous Posted April 29, 2005 Posted April 29, 2005 psssh. this doesnt require any science. they are just asking for imagination. the only science part of this is that they expect you to know what conditions the thing needs to live in. take each of the dangerous characteristics and invent some property about the critter that helps it survive. eg. it has skin made of porous diamonds so it can survive the intense heat.
AzurePhoenix Posted April 29, 2005 Posted April 29, 2005 It could have legs like hydrolic pistons with harpoon tips so it can latch to the ground and fight the wind. And look up thermoacidophiles. They thrive in fighteningly acidic environments. The leg thing's just an example. Come up with your own, slacker.
C3H5(NO3)3 Posted May 2, 2005 Posted May 2, 2005 Yeah, it's solely based on imagination, cmon now... Make it somehow NEED CO2 to live, it would work well for that, it adapts with very hot climates...and....lives underground to avoid the H2SO4 (Sulfuric Acid) Rain...
AlexT Posted May 2, 2005 Posted May 2, 2005 you could just make an underground bacteria capible of thriving of sulfer by converting it into energy but i suppose a bacteria wouldnt be very exciting
coquina Posted May 2, 2005 Posted May 2, 2005 Hi! I am an 8th grade honors science student. Check out this link: http://lecturer.ukdw.ac.id/dhira/Metabolism/lithotrophs.html Read the section about the tube worms of the deep sea. They form a mutualistic symbiotic relationship with the chemosynthetic bacteria in their gut. (Translation - the worms form an alliance with bacteria which eat chemicals to the benefit of both organisms.) So - your animal could also use rock-eating bacteria to help it survive. It also needs a firm anchor to keep it in place, so it could be something like a barnacle ( http://www.marlin.ac.uk/species/taxon_Balanuscrenatus.htm ) or a chiton. ( http://www.marlin.ac.uk/species/acanthochitonafascicularis.htm ) You could also explore symmetry. The majority of earthly animals are bilaterally symmetrical, but a few are radially symmetrical. http://www.zo.utexas.edu/faculty/sjasper/images/32.4.jpg However, your animal could be spherically symmetrical http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.shelterpub.com/_symmetry_online/hollyhock.gif&imgrefurl=http://www.shelterpub.com/_symmetry_online/sym2_spherical.html&h=250&w=360&sz=26&tbnid=kHlr-h5QQDMJ:&tbnh=81&tbnw=117&hl=en&start=1&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dspherical%2Bsymmetry%2B%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D if you wanted it to be. Instead of having to stay anchored in place, maybe it would "go with the flow" and eat whatever chemicals are floating around in the atmosphere.
5614 Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 Imagination.... You don't need oxygen, it's just what is used on earth, a specie could evolve using an alternative. High speeds, wind, kinetic energy, there's energy! Heat, thermal energy, there's energy! There's some ways of getting energy. And life doesn't have to be carbon based.... there were news articles about silicon based life forms, they're probably archived all over the internet.
Guest METH MAN Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 i have some good ideas for u idk if u will use them but if u like them tell me. Well since there is heaps n heaps of H2SO4 this creature could produce its own amount of NaOH or ne other basic compound. H2SO4 + NaOH --> NaSO4 + H2O + H+ there u have it H20 ur water supply. 800 f = round bout 427 celcius which isnt near as hot in blast furnaces. so a metallic skin???maybe..
Crash Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 (220mph winds, 800degrees f, sulfuric acid clouds, Harvey birdman, that naturally produces NaOH, can burrow with great ability and has metillic armor ( being made of metal to weigh it down from being blown away, like a lead peg leg or sutin, arrrr
