1145climber Posted April 30, 2005 Posted April 30, 2005 Hey all. Im in 9th grade, currently taking physics. Chemistry isnt until junior year, and thats a while. i dont want to wait two more years. so... does anyone know of a website that has like an online cirrculum that teaches basic chemistry? ive seen some cool sites that go through physics, chapter by chapter, just like our textbook, but i havent found any for chemistry. Im a smart kid and a quick learner, as well as being interested in the subject. so, any tips on where/how i could start learning chemistry? thanks for any ideas.
Lance Posted April 30, 2005 Posted April 30, 2005 I would go for a college chemistry book. Nothing beats having the book. I would personally recommend "chemistry" by McMurry Fay. It has lots of pretty pictures. You can get it used for next to nothing on amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/offer-listing/0130872059/ref=dp_olp_2//102-3921625-4652952?condition=all
akcapr Posted May 1, 2005 Posted May 1, 2005 heres an ok site that outlines/describes some things: http://antoine.frostburg.edu/chem/senese/101/index.shtml and heres another site with some info about it: http://chemistry.about.com/ However, nothing beats a good textbook that is full of pics.
jdurg Posted May 1, 2005 Posted May 1, 2005 Yes. Especially the textbook coming out later this year with pictures of my phosphorus in it. (Okay, I'll admit, this post was some spam. heh. But I do agree that nothing beats a good textbook with pictures and questions/answers in it).
H2SO4 Posted May 1, 2005 Posted May 1, 2005 the main thing is expierence in chemistry, you learn so much from demonstrations, id start with books and get yourself a good supply of basic chemicals: unitednuclear.com
Lance Posted May 1, 2005 Posted May 1, 2005 I hardly think unitednuclear is a good chemical supplier. Pyrotechnic supplier perhaps.
budullewraagh Posted May 1, 2005 Posted May 1, 2005 i suggest books before you start playing around with expensive, potentially hazardous chemicals
1145climber Posted May 1, 2005 Author Posted May 1, 2005 that book looks good, maybe ill buy it on amazon or ebay. thanks for the advice people.
akcapr Posted May 2, 2005 Posted May 2, 2005 once ur semi knowledgable and can safely weild chems, this is the BEST site for chemicasl. Not only are the chems not pyrothecnics, but the come in a fairly large variety and in good sized containers. By "good" i mean not too big, not too expensive. (p.s. : the also have good lab equipment) Heres the site: http://www.hometrainingtools.com/catalog/cat_chemistry.html
C3H5(NO3)3 Posted May 2, 2005 Posted May 2, 2005 Strange how "Intro to Chemistry" isn't introduced until Gr. 10, I'm in gr 9 and we already finished it...
budullewraagh Posted May 2, 2005 Posted May 2, 2005 your name refers to nitroglycerin, right? what sort of chem is it that you have done?
akcapr Posted May 2, 2005 Posted May 2, 2005 ya i noticed that too, was gonna comment butleft that to bud
C3H5(NO3)3 Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 Well...we basically took an "into to chemistry" course, it's just the mandatory academic (advanced) Science course I took, we learned the basics...the elements, how table is organized, all the models of the atoms and models that made a big different (Gold Foyle, Electrolosys etc) mainly focusing on the atom at the last part... I LOVED it though...took quite an interest in it and I think I'll be taking Gr 10 Academic Science first semester next year, and Gr 11 Chemistry 2nd semester...but....yeah, I just took an interest in Chemistry and kept reading after the unit was done... Sorry to hijack the thread...Yes my name refers to nitroglycerin
budullewraagh Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 that sounds like 8th grade to me (just before high school); we did "physical science"
chemi Posted May 7, 2005 Posted May 7, 2005 ok, here are some infor on chap. 1, if you want other chapters, just ask. chapter 1:The Nature of Matter (elements and the periodic table, atomic mass, modern atomic theory, trends in periodic table) http://periodic.lanl.gov/ http://periodic.lanl.gov/what.htm http://periodic.lanl.gov/use.html http://dl.clackamas.cc.or.us/ch104-04/dalton's.htm http://www.visionlearning.com/library/module_viewer.php?mid=50 http://www.visionlearning.com/library/module_viewer.php?mid=51 http://www.chemsoc.org/timeline/pages/1911.html http://chemistry.about.com/library/weekly/aa071802a.htm
