olmpiad Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 Hi! Does anybody know what a good etchant for a meteorite would be. They are iron meteorites, and are composed of the following Nickel Iron Kamacite (Alpha Iron) Taenite (Gamma Iron) I Need To Etch out the Kamacite so that i can show the windstatten figures
budullewraagh Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 so you just want to corrode metals? HF, H2SO4, HNO3, HClO4, HMnO4 come to mind
olmpiad Posted May 5, 2005 Author Posted May 5, 2005 Only corrode the kamacite, if the others corrode, ill run the windmanstatten pattern
H2SO4 Posted May 5, 2005 Posted May 5, 2005 what is alpha iron. An isotope? But then it would be worth thousands. I dont know and i know its most likely not an isotope but ive never heard of gamma or alpha iron. Explain then we may be able to help you better.
olmpiad Posted May 5, 2005 Author Posted May 5, 2005 Alpha and gamma irons are just another way of saying kamacite and taenite.
olmpiad Posted May 5, 2005 Author Posted May 5, 2005 The meteorite @ the bottom of the page in this auction is what it looks like when etched, when not etched, it looks like iron... http://i16.ebayimg.com/01/i/04/01/1f/f5_12_sb.JPG
