I am a post-graduate college athlete, and fairly new to the world of medical marijuana, and have recently become quite curious about something now that i've been allowed to take pre-workout since NCAA had (rightfully) banned quite a few, as well as smoke.

For a short background, I played 3 years of D1 baseball, and since have gotten labrum and UCL surgery, with some residual pain still residing. I found medical marijuana, sativa-leaning hybrids especially, to be a cure-all for my ailments, especially during my still rigorous workout routine.

The pre-workout routine is this: About 10 minutes before I begin, I take my pre-workout Gat PMP, which is propietary blend of beta-alanine, l-citruilline, l-arginine, l-tyrosine + few other AA's, and a hefty 525mg propietary blend of caffeine anhy + l-carnatine prior, as well as smoke .08g of a sativa-leaning hybrid, about the size of an eraser head. The result yields amazing pain alleviation, incredible focus, decrease muscle fatigue, and an endless fount of energy. But, only when I do it in a certain order...which finally leads me to my question:

 

What is going on at the cellular level that when I drink my pre-workout and THEN smoke are my workouts far superior to when I smoke PRIOR to taking my pre-workout? I have experimented with this over a dozen times and its full-proof, and my love for science has really got me curious. What's going on with the receptors and enzyme production and inhibition and catacholamine levels? I can almost feel that my energy is being inhibited when I smoke then take the pre-workout, and a bit sapped half way through the routine. Pain relief is still 100% though. Note that everyday I workout at the same time every morning, with the about the amount of sleep, and the same amount of food in my belly that was eaten 30-40minutes prior. Is the caffeine taken first just blocking the marijuanas ability to be sedated? More in depth answer the better! :)

Can you prove that you're performing better under these conditions? Just a thought here, but you may "feel" as though you're performing better under the influence of THC and caffeine. Not to mention, caffeine has a very short benefit when taken for workouts, because it dehydrates you.

 

Record the amount of time it takes you to run a set distance, or the number of repetitions for a particular workout under the influence and then off.

Also possible the meds will take a little bit long to act? Consider loading up sooner before your workout? Anyway you can document performance levels with and without? Sometimes also one may feel better but the reality is that focus is affected. Just saying. ex RN

Drinking caffeine–containing beverages as part of a normal lifestyle doesn't cause fluid loss in excess of the volume ingested. While caffeinated drinks may have a mild diuretic effect — meaning that they may cause the need to urinate — they don't appear to increase the risk of dehydration.
