Hi, I have a couple pounds of potassium hydroxide that I need to dispose of safely.

 

I have basic DIY safety equipment and outdoor spaces.

 

How should I proceed?

Why not just keep it until you find a use for it?

Well, I've kept it so long waiting to find a use for it that it has begun eating through the plastic containers it was shipped in.

Can you donate to someone? It is possible to use in the production of biodiesel, for example.

KOH reacts with CO₂ from air creating K₂CO3 and KHCO₃.

If you will have it in solution, with ready access of air (attach air pump for aquarium, if you want to accelerate it),

it will happen spontaneously.

 

Do you have it in solution or solid?

 

If it's solid, keep it in hermetic container (it catches water and carbon dioxide from air).

If it's in solution, you can boil entire water, to turn it to solid, and keep this way.
